Breast Self-Exams

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting women. Self breast-exams and mammograms can help detect breast cancer. Read about how to do your monthly exams and other helpful information.

Fast Facts: Breast Exams and Breast Cancer

  • Breast cancer is the number-two cause of cancer-related deaths in women.
  • Any woman (even some men) can get breast cancer.
  • Most breast cancers are first discovered by women themselves.
  • Ninety percent of early breast cancer is curable.
  • Self-breast exams can help you notice changes in your breasts.
  • Self-exams only take 10 minutes a month.
  • A doctor should examine your breasts once a year.
  • A mammogram can find breast cancer years before you can feel it.
  • If you are between the ages of 40 to 49, you should get a mammogram every one to two years. Over 50, get a mammogram every year.
  • If breast cancer is found early and treated promptly, there are excellent chances for cure.
