Understanding Peer Pressure

Peer Pressure comes from all areas of society…through advertisements in magazines and television, movies, songs, books and even friends. These commercials and advertisements place you in a fantasy where you are a "star." They even show you living a certain way with lots of money, partying and hanging out with a lot of your so-called friends. They may also show what it's like to be caught up in a "glamorous" life of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Then sex, which you may or may not be ready for right now, becomes a major issue. There is always a chance of contracting an STD or even getting pregnant. Instead of getting caught in an unpleasant situation, educate yourself so that you can make the right choices.

Many teens are having sex because they think:

  • It makes me popular
  • I'm a part of the in-crowd
  • I need it to be a man/be a woman
  • Everybody's doing it
  • Sex is fun
  • If it feels good, do it

If you are going to have sex, be responsible by using a method of contraception and communicating with your partner. Think about every decision you have to make in your life. Don't let anyone pressure you into doing something you're not ready to do. Take responsibility for your actions.

Be cool and safe. Educate yourself and others!
