Male Involvement Programs

For many years, family planning has primarily focused on women's health. However as part of the Healthy People 2010 objectives, male involvement in family planning has been emphasized through community outreach, educational opportunities and additional clinical services for men.

Two Title X-funded male involvement programs have been established within Indiana at Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County in Indianapolis and Health Connection of Wabash Valley Human Services in Terre Haute.

These two programs have implemented the "Wise Guys Male Responsibility Curriculum" into efforts to educate adolescent males between the ages of 10 and 19 about such topics as sexual responsibility, family values, decision-making, reproductive anatomy and sexually transmitted diseases. These programs focus on each topic throughout an eight- to 10-week period.

The program participants enjoy the group discussions, role-playing and projects on each weekly topic. Most importantly, the program participants enjoy the interaction and group dynamics. These male involvement programs have played an important role in expanding the scope of family planning by educating adolescent males in various churches, community centers, juvenile detention centers and schools in Terre Haute and Indianapolis.

If you are interested in establishing a "Wise Guys" program in your community, contact IFHC. We may be able to help.
