Contraception

Female Condom (vaginal pouch, Reality Female Condom®)

What Is It?

Female condoms are thin sheaths of polyurethane plastic with polyurethane rings at both ends. They are inserted into the vagina before intercourse.

How Does It Work?

Creates a barrier between penis and vagina. Collects and holds the semen. Egg and sperm do not meet. Fertilization does not occur.

How Is It Used?

Must be inserted prior to contact between penis and vagina. One ring is placed deep inside the vagina; the second ring remains outside of the vagina. The condom is removed and discarded without spilling the semen. Used for one act of intercourse. The condom cannot be reused.

How Well Does It Work?

Typical use: 79%. Perfect use: 95%.

What Are Its Main Advantages?

Reversible. Can be bought at many drugstores. Can be placed in vagina up to 8 hours before use. May not tear as easily as male condoms; polyurethane is stronger than latex.

What Are Some Possible Problems?

May slip out of place during sex. May be difficult for some women to insert. May affect sexual sensations. May cause irritation or discomfort. Increased risk for toxic shock syndrome.
